Has it really been that long?

I couldn’t believe how long it has been since I wrote a blog post, almost a year! I haven’t stopped sewing, in fact I have been so busy sewing that I forgot to post anything, or take any photo’s. Quite a lot has happened in the last few months, we moved house in April (more on that later) which is why I didn’t take part in Me made May this year. I will definitely be taking part again next year as I really enjoy it and I love to see what everyone else has been making. Here are a few of the things I made recently that I managed to get photo’s of!

I had a bit of an obsession with the Grainline Studio Linden Sweatshirt, here are just 3 of them, I actually made 5! I really like using contrasting fabric for the sleeves, it is a bit of a stash buster as you don’t need a lot of material for it.

My other new obsession is the Made by Rae Washi dress, I have 2 but I also made 2 for my sister, I was initially put off by the shirring elastic at the back but I used Rae’s website for more information and she explains it really clearly, using a hot steamy iron afterwards makes all the difference!

I made a few shift dresses using a pattern that I drafted myself. We took part in Sew Saturday, watch this space for details about what we will be doing for Sew Saturday this year.

My biggest project of the year was Stew’s coat, the Colette Albion duffle coat. This has got to be one of the trickiest items of clothing that I have made ever! The fabric is a heavy felt with a sticky texture on the back, I broke several needles and my sewing machine hated me! It is lined with a fleece blanket from Ikea so it is really cosy and warm, it came in very useful during the snowy weather earlier this year.

As I said we moved house this year, it happened to be during one of those spells of wintery weather! It is a gorgeous Victorian house and one of the best features is the open fire.

Well that’s enough waffling on from me! I want to take this opportunity to welcome our new, regular guest blogger, she has been a constant customer of ours since we opened the Trixie Lixie shop and we have finally persuaded her to showcase her talent on our blog. You may already know @saraknitsandsews from Instagram, where she describes herself as ‘been knitting all my life, recently trying to improve my sewing. Expect to see pics of a manic Mum looking embarrassed modelling stuff!’ We love her Instagram posts and are positive that you are going to love her blog posts. Watch this space for the first one coming soon!

Finished my Violet blouse, so here’s another garden selfie, complete with goosebumps! I shall make another but will cut a smaller size. Pattern and fabric bought at @trixielixiepics @colettepatterns #violetblouse

Me Made May final instalment

Here are my last few outfits from Me Made May, on the 21st May I wore a new Sew me Something Viola skirt which is reversible! Gorgeous Kaffe Fasset flowers on one side and lush lime green fabric on the reverse! The top is a jersey Sewaholic Belcarra blouse and the film………………..is a classic! I carried a watermelon!

I love the smell of napalm in the morning! Weather changed again on 22nd May so I am back in my Ginger Jeans! With a  Grainline Studio Linden sweatshirt, I love this pattern, its really quick and easy to make, I made a short sleeve version today so that makes 4 already!

Today (day 23) I am wearing a denim Colette patterns Aster shirt that I have extended into a shirt dress, with my fabulous yellow Saltwater sandals! “Strength & honour!” That Tiger is just a big pussycat!

Day 24 and I am wearing a Gather Sewing patterns Mortmain dress! In another great film today with 2 gorgeous guys! Paul Newman and Robert Redford!

may23-2017

I think we finally foxed everyone with this film! I am one of “the Good” I like to think. Wearing my Liberty fabric Anna Dress.

The weather started getting hotter again, what is it with our weather at the moment? So I am wearing my shorts today, these are from the Colette Seamworks online magazine, the Nantucket shorts and a Liberty jersey Sewaholic Belcarra blouse. It wasn’t quite as hot as it is in the film but I think it was the hottest day of the year so far!

may26-2017

I hope no-one notices that I have got the same top on as yesterday! Dohh…………….too late! Yesterdays hot weather is a thing of the past now so I am wearing my Closet case boyfriend jeans instead of shorts. My mate Errol is so cold he has had to put some tights on! Don’t you just love to see Men in tights!

I need a drink before I take a closer look at that plant! Day 28 and I am wearing a dress that I made about 8 years ago to wear to a wedding, Its a Colette Ceylon dress, this is the dress that made me decide to start my sewing and fabric website TrixieLixie. Today’s film is probably the scariest one I have ever seen, I hate horror films!

Oh and this film has got to be one of my favorites! I have met Mr LLM at the airport or at the train station on a number of occasions and its always emotional! Today I am wearing a short version of the Grainline Studio Moss skirt with an Aurora vest which is another pattern from Colette Seamworks online magazine.

may25-2017

Well I found him! Don’t we look like a couple of Wallies! I am wearing another Colette Seamworks online magazine pattern, the Astoria top with a Sew Serendipity denim skirt, MrLLM is wearing a Thread Theory  Strathcona Henley. We are a bit star struck by Charlton Heston!

may29-2017

Last day of Me Made May 2017 and we really foxed you with this film! It’s Elvis playing a ukulele and we are getting down! I am wearing a Sew Serendipity skirt that matches MrLLM’s Colette Negroni shirt!

Sewing Classes

We have just set up our timetable of Sewing classes to be held at Trixie Lixie during May.

The first class is a very basic introduction to using a sewing machine, Hello Sewing is for anyone who has got a sewing machine but have no idea how to use it, I will show you how to thread the machine, load the bobbin, set the tension and begin to sew. We will go through all the stitches on the machine and make a pot holder. We can provide the sewing machine or you can bring your own. (6th May)

The second class is also a beginners class; Make a patchwork cushion. In this class we will use pre-cut squares from a charm pack to put together a patchwork cushion with a zip closure. (13th May)

Then we are going to run a Shift dress/tunic class over 2 weeks. This is a beginners class, however it is preferable that you already know how to use a sewing machine (or have attended Hello Sewing). This is an easy dress pattern as it doesn’t have a zip or buttons, it is pull over the head, you will learn how to do darts and sleeves. Bring your own pre-washed fabric (2.5m) or choose from our selection. (20th & 27th May)

Space is limited so it is essential that you phone us to book a place on 02920 344464.

We are also starting a Thursday evening Sewing club, you can bring your own project, start a new one with our help, learn how to make your own wardrobe using our machines or bring your own.

Lampshade Making Classes

We have got lampshade making kits available to buy both on our website and in the shop. You can book a class and come into the shop and we will show you how to make a lampshade. The class costs £27.50 for a 30cm diameter lampshade made up in your choice of fabric from the lovely selection in our Cardiff based shop.

If you are interested call us on 02920 344464 or email us at hello@trixielixie.co.uk

img_3671

The one in our window is made from Hemingway fabric which is based on vintage fabric designs so it is very retro looking!

The lampshade can be made for pendant use or for a table lamp and the fabric choice is all yours, you can even choose to add embellishments such as fringe or pom-pom.

For a more unique and individual lampshade you could try applique, take a look at a blog post that I did last year for my Bumble bee & Butterfly lampshade.

We have a shop!

I am really excited about writing this post! We have been looking for premises to open our Trixie Lixie sewing shop for over a year and in May this year we found the perfect place in Gelligaer Gardens in Cardiff, easy we thought. Give us the key in a couple of weeks, quick shop fit, open in July! Oh no! It certainly is not that easy! It takes months of lease negotiating, solicitors, land registry etc etc so you can imagine our excitement when we finally got the key on 22nd November!

img_25621

So we began the process of building flat packs and putting up shelves ….

We chose a dark colour because we think it shows off the colours of the fabrics well. Once the shelving was all in we began moving the stock in, we have traded online for over 3 years and our stock has been in various rooms for storage so it was great to finally get it all out together, and quite a surprise that we have got so much!

I had the most fun doing the shop window and adding a few Christmas touches!

So we managed to open on Saturday 3rd December, thank you to all our visitors so far and we are looking forward to seeing many more of you.

Come and see us at 25 Gelligaer Gardens, Cathays, Cardiff CF24 4LT you can give us a ring on 02920 344464 and you can visit the website at http://www.trixielixie.co.uk

See you soon!
