We’ve always liked ZenChic’s style. Her new signature collection ‘For You‘ has splashes of bright colours popping from calm lighter backgrounds.

Hello Darling‘ is Bonnie and Camille’s cheeriest collection yet, with plenty of beautiful florals, dots, bias stripes and vintage ribbon.

With the ‘Neco‘ collection, Momo is stlll designing fantasy worlds inhabited by cute cats and hedgehogs.

Bunny Hill Design’s ‘Kindred Spirit’ collection was designed as a celebration of life and a testament to women who have fought Breast Cancer. This gorgeous collection has plenty of pinks, as it should.

Typical design by Me and My Sister, ‘Hi De Ho‘ features bright and cheerful colours that have a real retro feel featuring flowers, dragonflies and stripes.

Designed by April Rosenthal, ‘Meadowbloom‘ was designed to be happy, and springy, and all the beautiful vibrant colours that remind us of a huge field of wildflowers.

Colourful, bold and contemporary, these pre-cuts would bless any quilting or crafting project.

They are not really for Christmas makes, but I think I’m going to buy myself a couple as Christmas presents.

Tutu’s & Scarves.

I have been busy making Christmas presents and thought I would share these ones with you. I have 2 young niece’s to make gifts for , the youngest is 4 and the eldest is 9 so I was delighted to find this FREE pattern from Oliver + S that you can pick up from their blog. The Onstage Tutu skirt. We stock a selection of Oliver + S patterns so it was good to try this one out, the instructions were really clear and by the time I was on my second one I flew through the making of it.

Onstage Tutu SkirtI chose to use some of our spotty Georgette fabrics rather than Tutu fabric, its light weight and sheer so it drapes beautifully;

You could also use voile or cotton lawn, and we have some rather lovely crinoline that would work wonderfully with this pattern too, I just used lining fabric for the main body of the skirt and I love the way you turn it out at the top to form a waist band. You only need a small amount of fabric (basically the length you require + 5 inches) so it was a really cheap, quick and easy make.

Another quick and easy make are scarves, I am making several of these using some of our lush and lightweight crepe fabrics, half a metre is enough for one. All you do is hem all the way around to finish the edges, it’s that easy! And at £2.30 for half a metre another reasonably priced gift!

Have you been making your Christmas presents this year? I would love to know what everybody else is making for their family and friends.

Cute kids sewing kits

When I was young I used to love making things with my Mum and then when I had my own children I really enjoyed making things with them, my kids are too old now, however I think they would’ve loved these cute animal kits.

Cute Fox & Badger making kit

So you can make yourself a pair of animal friends like Badger and Fox

Badger & Fox kits

The Button Company have done a step by step tutorial here which is an excellent guide.

Tabby cat kit

You just need to add stuffing as everything else you need is in the box, Tabby cat & Mouse.

Black cat & Mouse kit

It doesn’t give an age for these kits but I think that with adult supervision a 7 year old could do them, I might have to do the Black Cat & Mouse kit with my young neice next time she comes and stays.

Cat & Mouse sewing kits

I think these kits would make great christmas presents for boys or girls who like crafting.

Christmas gift ideas

I am never sure how early I shoud start talking about Christmas, some people I know like to get all their planning & preperation done by October! Others leave it until the last minute! Either way I am going to start suggesting some gift idea’s and sharing some great tutorials for making your own presents. I have a large family & I like to make as many gifts myself as I can.

Felix tea towel kit

So my first gift suggestion is a tea towel! But not just an ordinary tea towel! It is also a kit to make a cushion, so you have the option to give the tea towel as the gift or to make it into the cushion and give that as a gift!

Sarah Young tea towel cushionsThey are designed by Sarah Young a Painter, Printmaker, Illustrator and maker. Her work is often narrative, inspired by and referencing, myth, folk tales, circus and burlesque imagery. The tea towels are cotton, screen printed, and they can be cut, sewn and stuffed to make lovely toys or cushions, or fill with sand, pulses/grains to make a doorstop; Or simply keep as a lovely bright tea towel for your kitchen.

Gorgeous scarf tutorial

A while back I posted a scarf tutorial using a beautiful piece of Amy Butler Voile and pom pom trim.

DIY scarf tutorialSince then I have made several more as Christmas presents, these ones are even easier because they have fringe trim which is very simple to attach!

Scarf making tutorialOn the TrixieLixie website we have the fabric and fringe trim already packed up into kits for £15, so all you need to do is follow the instructions and make a gorgeous scarf.

scarf kits from TrixieLixieThis is how it is done: fold the piece of fabric in half, right sides together and sew along the width

Scarf tutorialThen finish the seam with either a zig-zag stitch, a serger or my favourite – pinking shears

Scarf tutorialTurn the right way around and then fold the ends under by about 1cm and pin the fringe inside, then sew in place.

scarf tutorialscarf tutorialAnd thats it! You’re done, either keep it for yourself or give it as a lovely gift!

Scarf making tutorial

Mine are all gifts and I have found (in my stash of things to good to be thrown away) these great boxes to put them in and I am going to decorate them with fabric and trim just like this beautiful box that a friend of mine decorated for me for my birthday (it had wonderful hand made shower gel and body lotion in it that she had also made!)

Oven Gloves Tutorial

It’s always difficult to think of something to make as a mans gift, we are having Christmas dinner at my brothers house this year and he will be doing the cooking (Goose is on the menu I think!) so his present is going to be these oven gloves so that he doesn’t burn himself

Oven Gloves TutorialThe fabric I used is Michael Millers Ketchup and Mustard

Firts of all I made a pattern using an old pair of oven gloves, basically it is a rectangle 37cm by 20cm with rounded edges

Oven Gloves tutorialPlace this on the fold of the fabric and cut 2 pieces, then cut out one piece of  wadding

Then fold the pattern so that you have 20cm by 20cm for the hand pieces, you can see where I have marked this on the pattern. You need to cut out 4 pieces in the fabric and 2 in the wadding.

Oven Gloves TutorialDo the hand pieces first, sandwich the wadding in the middle of 2 pieces of fabric, right sides facing up, pin and baste these together

Oven Gloves tutorialTrim the edges

Oven Gloves TutorialNext attach the bias binding to the straight edge

Oven Gloves TutorialDo the same to the main part of the oven gloves, so sandwich together with the wadding, baste and trim, then pin each hand piece to the ends

Oven Gloves TutorialFinally, pin and sew the bias binding all the way around the edge of the oven gloves

Oven Gloves Tutorial Next week I am going to be making an apron for my sister in law, its going to have to be a frilly one!

Happy Sewing!
