Pillow Frenzy

It seems that I’ve had a bit of a run on making pillowcases for my friends. I love giving them as gifts, as they are so easy to make.

With these ones I made for my sister, I’ve used Gutermann fabrics with a touch of pom pom specialness. They go brilliantly with her seaside themed front room. This Gutermann collection has lots of subtle colours which would fit well in any environment.

Christmas gift ideas

I am never sure how early I shoud start talking about Christmas, some people I know like to get all their planning & preperation done by October! Others leave it until the last minute! Either way I am going to start suggesting some gift idea’s and sharing some great tutorials for making your own presents. I have a large family & I like to make as many gifts myself as I can.

Felix tea towel kit

So my first gift suggestion is a tea towel! But not just an ordinary tea towel! It is also a kit to make a cushion, so you have the option to give the tea towel as the gift or to make it into the cushion and give that as a gift!

Sarah Young tea towel cushionsThey are designed by Sarah Young a Painter, Printmaker, Illustrator and maker. Her work is often narrative, inspired by and referencing, myth, folk tales, circus and burlesque imagery. The tea towels are cotton, screen printed, and they can be cut, sewn and stuffed to make lovely toys or cushions, or fill with sand, pulses/grains to make a doorstop; Or simply keep as a lovely bright tea towel for your kitchen.

Winters Lane

We  have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Seville, such a beautiful city, we had a very relaxing time in the gorgeous sunshine seeing all the wonderful gardens and architecture. On our return we found a parcel of fantastic new fabric, its Winters Lane from Moda fabric’s and it is lovely. I am brimming with idea’s for Christmas makes, there is an inspiring panel for a cushion, bunting and gift tags, but I am also thinking aprons, placemats and table runners, even a cute A-Line Christmas skirt!

Yesterday my sister came to see me and when she saw the panel she decided to make a cushion and bunting straight away, she trimmed the cushion with some pom pom and used the lovely feather fabric for the back, it’s a good size cushion 50 x 50.

winters lane 022She used a small piece of fabric and some of my vintage buttons for the fastenings

winters lane 001For the bunting she used red bias binding folded in half over the top of the pieces

winters lane 018You could also use these piece’s to make fabric covered christmas cards

winters lane 011It’s probably a bit early to be raving about Christmas makes but this fabric range is just lovely. We have a free instruction leaflet for the cushion and bunting panel for the first 20 customers.

winters lane 014Doesn’t my garden look lovely as a back drop, thats because it is glorious summer at the moment, perfect for Christmas photography!

winters lane 010I think this fabric range is going to feature heavily in my Christmas makes series this year, watch this space for my 12 makes of Christmas, tutorial’s and gift idea’s starting in October.

Monday makes! Cushions

Today I have made a couple of envelope style cushions using some of the Moda Coquette fabric available at Trixie Lixie

For the Pom pom cushion I used 3 fat quarters of fabric and 2 metres of pom pom

First of all I cut the fabric into three 50cm squares (to fit 45cm square cushion pads) and I neatened all the edges, I used my overlocker (serger) but you could use zig zag stitch or a pair of pinking shears.

Next I attached the pom pom to all the edges of the main piece of fabric

This next bit is a bit tricky, you need to layer the pieces together and fold some edges to form the envelope opening, on both the back pieces fold over about 10cm then place them on top of each other right side facing up with overlapping edges it should be the same size as the top piece

Finally add the top piece to the sandwich making sure the pom pom pieces are facing in towards the middle of the cushion pin together and carefully sew all 4 edges

Once you have done this its just a matter of turning it the right way round and putting the cushion pad in.

If this cushion is a bit too tricky to start with you can make an easier version with half a metre of fabric, I neatened all the edges again and then folded the fabric, 6cm at each end and then right sides together to make a square

Sew down each side and there you go, turn it the right way round and put the cushion pad in!
