Me made May catch up

It’s almost May and another Me-Made-May is fast approaching so I thought I would re-post my first ever Me-Made-May! I always have so much fun doing it and can’t wait for this May so that I can do it all again, any suggestions for my theme this year? Last year it was Where am I, there wasn’t much of a theme to the first one, it just evolved!

Me-Made-May 2014

MeMadeMay 2014 day 18Although it says day 19 on this image it was in fact only day 18, I got a bit confused! Being on a pirate ship probably didn’t help! I am wearing a Colette Ceylon Dress that I made a few years ago, #mmm2014 has really encouraged me to wear a lot of outfits that have been sitting in the back of my wardrobe!

MeMadeMay 2014 day 19So this is actually day 19 and I look as if I am having a great time on the waltzers but actually fair ground rides absolutely terrify me! I am wearing a Simple Sew A-line skirt which is exactly that – a very simple sew and the pattern for £7.50 is also a very good price, the fabric is from the Moda Honky Tonk range which I love! My Blouse is the Sewaholic Belcarra that I have mentioned in previous posts.

MeMadeMay 2014 day 20Party on! My gorgeous Mortmain dress that I am loving at the moment, I make dresses all the time and then hardly wear them so it’s great to get the opportunity to show them off at the moment and I must continue to wear them when #mmm2014 finishes!

MeMadeMay 2014 day 21On day 21 I did actually go and see Joe Brown in concert, he was GREAT and those of you who know me will realise that I am actually playing that ukulele (although not actually with Joe!) as it is something I like to do when I am not sewing! This By Hand London Anna dress has got to be my favourite make of the month, I love it!

MeMadeMay 2014 day 22This has got to be one of my favorite photo’s of the month, I didn’ know what animal it was going to be Mr LLM just said today you are going to the zoo! The dress is a self drafted jersy knit using some of the funky jersey fabric we have in stock at the moment and the leggings are Cake Espresso’s.

MeMadeMay 2014 day 23I am really enjoying sewing with knit fabrics at the moment, I treated myself to a copy of the new Colette book ‘Sewing with knits’ and it has given me the confidence to try lots of knit patterns, including this Colette Moneta dress, if you have got a serger you can make this really quickly! More lush jersey fabric!

MeMadeMay 2014 day 24It was a gorgeous day today so I am wearing shorts, these are just a pair of cut-off jeans but I really want to make some Thurlow shorts for the summer, and the top is my stripey Sewaholic Renfrew, another quick and easy jersey make.

MeMadeMay 2014 day 25pgWe went away for the week end so I appear to be camping in a tiny tent here, but actually we stayed in a caravan, it was pretty cold in the evenings though so I was really gratefull for my Sewaholic Tofino trousers and hand knitted Rowan wool bobble hat and jumper!

MeMadeMay 2014 day 26I feel like Alice in Wonderland in this shot! Rocking my A-Line skirt as mentioned earlier and yet another jersey top, this time a Cake Cabrita.

MeMadeMay 2014 day 27On day 27 I was serving pints for Manet, enormous pints! I love this gingham Belcarra blouse!

MeMadeMay 2014 day 28Somehow I ended up in the fridge today! Its a good job that I have got a hand knitted hat on to keep my head warm! I am also wearing my Black Sewaholic Thurlow trousers and a Colette Jasmine blouse, this is one of the blouse’s that is available to buy as a kit from the website.

Well thats me all up to date, only a few more days to go, it’s been great fun!

Christmas gift ideas

I am never sure how early I shoud start talking about Christmas, some people I know like to get all their planning & preperation done by October! Others leave it until the last minute! Either way I am going to start suggesting some gift idea’s and sharing some great tutorials for making your own presents. I have a large family & I like to make as many gifts myself as I can.

Felix tea towel kit

So my first gift suggestion is a tea towel! But not just an ordinary tea towel! It is also a kit to make a cushion, so you have the option to give the tea towel as the gift or to make it into the cushion and give that as a gift!

Sarah Young tea towel cushionsThey are designed by Sarah Young a Painter, Printmaker, Illustrator and maker. Her work is often narrative, inspired by and referencing, myth, folk tales, circus and burlesque imagery. The tea towels are cotton, screen printed, and they can be cut, sewn and stuffed to make lovely toys or cushions, or fill with sand, pulses/grains to make a doorstop; Or simply keep as a lovely bright tea towel for your kitchen.

They are very easy to make up, you just need toy stuffing or they make goreous tea towels

Sewing in the summer

I have been a bit quiet on the blogging front but I have still been sewing away although I do find it hard to spend time in the house at my sewing machine when the sun is shining. I really like to sit in the sun and read a good book in the summer, I love to look at sewing books and plan what I am going make, I always end up with an enormous list.

At the beginning of the month it was my gorgeous daughters birthday and I wanted to make her a summery dress the Sewaholic Saltspring is perfect!

Sewaholic Saltspring dressDoesn’t she looks lovely in it! I used some of our delicate and floaty voile fabric Field Study Sinister Swarm, a strange name for such beautiful fabric!

We now have the new patterns from Tilly and the Buttons

I made myself a Miette skirt using some of the Amy Butler Soul Blossoms Cord

tracy-mieteIts a wrap-around skirt, so very easy to make, no zips or buttons! The patterns are lovely and the instructions are clear and easy to follow.

We have also had the mens sewing patterns from Thread Theory a very exciting addition to our range, I want to have a go at making the Comox trunks.

thread-theory-comox-trunks-sewing-pattern-1894-p[ekm]230x288[ekm]I love this picture from their blog, I don’t think I will get any of the boys in my family to model in their underwear for me!

Thurlow shorts and W.I.P

This week we had some lovely Amy Butler babycord fabric delivered, it is velvety soft and as soon as I saw it I knew I needed to make something straight away!

The weather has been so lovely for the past couple of weeks and I had been promising myself a pair of Thurlow shorts so this seemed the ideal opportunity to make some!

Soul Blossom Thurlow shortsI found the LLadybird Thurlow sew-along a great help for making these, particularly for the pockets and zipper, I used one of our gorgeous everyday cotton spotty fabrics for the pocket and waistband lining and one of the button’s from The Button Museum in Ross-on Wye that a friend recently gave to me.

cordshortsI love all three of these corduroys so I am thinking of making a couple of skirts next! A Colette Ginger perhaps? Or if I can wait a week we are getting the Tilly and the Buttons patterns in and I could make a Miette Skirt! Watch this space!

My other W.I.P is a gorgeous Chickadee cardigan from Little Red in the City, its knitted in one piece which means you can try it on for size as you are going along, I have got quite a lot of it done but unfortunately I am now suffering from tennis elbow and knitting is just too painful so I have had to put it aside for about a month while my arm recovers!

Has anyone else had to stop sewing or knitting due to injury? Mr LLM is saying that I have knitters elbow as I have not been near a tennis racket for years! The nearest I am getting to Tennis at the moment is watching Wimbledon!Chickadee cardigan WIPThe wool I am using is from the National Museum of Wales, Woollen Museum, I love the vintage style colours that they have used to dye this beautiful yarn. Perhaps I will get it finished in time for the Autumn and cooler weather.

The last of #mmmay2014

Well it has been much fun! I can’t wait to do it all again next year! Any way here is the last few pictures from my Me made May exploits 2014.

MeMadeMay 2014 day 29jpgThis is a self drafted shift dress, the fabric is Michael Miller Scandi Leaves in Forest, its got gorgeous colours in it, and I have used some Deep Purple satin bias binding to finish the neck and arm holes. Thoses dummies are looking at my dress with envy!

MeMadeMay 2014 day 30Yesterday I took a trip back in time to the Wild, Wild West. Smokin’ !!

I am wearing another one of my Amy Butler Barcelona skirts, the fabric is The Birds & the Bees, Tree of life in Pool, its from the Freespirit range designed by Tula Pink. My top is another Sewaholic Renfrew in gorgeous Teal jersey cotton. Such a shame it is in black & white and you can’t see the gorgeous colours!

Me made May 2014 day 30 colourWell look at that! As if by magic you can see my outfit in the glory of colour!

Well today is the last day and we have had such fun doing all these photos! It has been quite hard thinking up a new theme every day so I am glad its not my full time career, and how do those glamour models keep smiling??

Me made May 2014 Day 31I decided to wear my favorite dress today and I am thinking I should definately make another one! Its the By Hand London Anna Dress and the gorgeous fabric is from Riley Blakes vintage Happy Range. Let me know which photo is your favorite, I love the Polar bear one and also I quite like the idea of sitting in the fridge!

Me made May day 1

I wanted to start Me made May with a bang, and I had a very important Birthday party to go to so I decided to make my Mortmain dress to wear. The Mortmain was designed by a small British pattern company called Gather, its quick and fairly easy to make, they recommend it for ambitious beginners!

MeMadeMay Mortmain dressIt was a bit wet and miserable so I wore it with my boots! The fabric I used is from one of our new Moda ranges, Simply Style by V & Co.

gather-mortmain-dress-sewing-pattern-[5]-1599-pGather are a very new company, they only have 2 patterns, the other one is for a really cute collar called The Tallis, I think I might have to make one of those too so that I can keep my pledge to wear something handmade every day during MeMadeMay.

The Belcarra Blouse

When the brand new Sewaholic Belcarra blouse patterns arrived this week I couldn’t wait to have a go at making one, it was so EASY to make that I immediately made another one!

Two blouses in one day, I think this pattern is going to be very useful, especailly if, like me, you make lots of skirts and never have any tops to wear them with.

The first one is made using some lovely embroidered and sequinned white cotton lawn from our dressmaking fabrics range.

belcarra-embroided-lawnMy next one is made from some of our Gorgeous Gingham which I think is really retro style!

belcarra-ginghamMy favorite is the gingham one, so here I am wearing it with my Colette Beignet skirt

tracy-publicityI just need to make a few more Belcarra’s and then I will be ready for Me-Made-May!

‘I, Trixie Lixie, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’14. I endeavour to wear a hand-made garment each day for the duration of May 2014′

MMM14logolargeHere are the links to the Flickr group and the Pinterest board.

Barcelona Skirt

This is probably the easiest skirt I have ever made, it’s the Amy Butler Barcelona skirt, its a gorgeous A-line skirt, fully lined and a beautifully concealed zip.

Barcelona SkirtThe fabric I used is a Free Spirt fabric by Anna Maria Horner from her Field Study range, it is called Raindrops Pop Candy isn’t that a great name?

I used some Turquoise lining fabric and then I trimmed the bottom with some Teal velvet ribbon.

amy-butler-barcelona-skirt-sewing-pattern-1520-p[ekm]195x288[ekm]This is a very easy pattern to follow and I would recommend it for beginners.

Happy sewing!
